Explore the beautiful region of the Charente-Maritime.

The region of Charente-Maritime offers many different activities and places to discover, not far from our gîte, such as:

The natural site of Vitrezay, which is the best place to go for a nice walk in the open air and for the pleasure of going fishing for children. You could also go on a short cruise on the Gironde estuary, with a private guide. Here is the phone number for more information: +33 5 46 49 89 89.

If you like seaside activities, head for the Atlantic coast. You can take boat trips from the ports at Meschers and Royan, jet ski in Saint-Georges de Didonne. In Royan, every July, there is also the music festival “Un violon sur le sable” (a violin on the sand).

Visit the troglodyte caves in Meschers or the Gallo-Roman museum of Fâ. Walk through the streets of the village called Talmont (which is one of the most beautiful villages in France), and admire the magnificent views from the high ramparts.

Drive along the roads up to the town of Cognac, where you can visit the famous distilleries to discover the making of French cognac and 'pineau', a fortified wine(one of the region's best kept secrets!)

10 kilometers from the gîte is the lovely town of Jonzac, where you can relax in the thermal baths, go to the casino or visit the “Les Antilles” aqua park.

Do not hesitate to go to the beautiful town of La Rochelle and its surrounding areas. Leave your car at La Rochelle and take the half hour boat trip to the island of Aix where the only forms of transport are horses, carts and bicycles. From La Rochelle you can visit Madame island, accessible on foot at low tide or drive over the bridge tothe island of Ré which is famous for its salt marshes and its bicycle rides. From these different islands, you can see the famous Fort Boyart and the Cordouan lighthouse. Do not forget to visit the town of Marennes, which is known for its oysters.

If you like animals, there is also the famous zoo in La Palmyre (next to Royan), which is one of the biggest zoos in Europe, or the Aquarium in La Rochelle, which one of the biggest aquariums in Europe.
